THISTLECRACK cemented his position as the horse to beat in the World Hurdle as he dominated his rivals in the galliardhomes.com Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Having followed second-favourite Camping Ground throughout, Tom Scudamore always looked confident on 4-5 favourite Thistlecrack, and once he let his mount go approaching the last the pair skipped clear on their way to a 12-length success. Ptit Zig was second, with Camping Ground a seemingly non-staying fifth.

The World Hurdle now looks to be at least one corner of the Cheltenham Festival that Willie Mullins will struggle to conquer, as Thistlecrack became on overwhelming favourite in the wake of his victory. Betfair initially offered 7-4, but soon moved him into 6-4.

‘Absolutely brilliant’

Trainer Colin Tizzard looked a little taken aback by the performance. He said afterwards: “I had the nerve to say to John [Snook, owner] I didn’t think he was in quite the same form as at Ascot, but there you are. He was absolutely brilliant today.

“He’s powered up that hill away from some really top-class opposition. It’s a World Hurdle qualifier, really, and he’s won it by 12 lengths without coming off the bridle.”

Asked if he was any closer to knowing Thistlecrack’s limit, Tizzard was unable to oblige. “I don’t know how good he is,” he said. “Nothing can stay with him anymore on the gallops and then he comes here and does that.”

Suggestions that he might work Thistlecrack and Gold Cup contender Cue Card together were laughed off, but Tizzard’s mind was soon back to serious business of bringing both to the festival in top form.

“We’re still five or six weeks away, so much can go wrong- you only have to look at what happened to Willie’s horse [Djakadam] earlier,” he said. “If I can get them both there in the form they’re currently in, then we’ve a lot to look forward to.”
