Report: Cheltenham, Tuesday

OLBG Mares’ Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m4f, 4yo+ fillies and mares

VROUM VROUM MAG justified hot favouritism at 4-6 with a comfortable victory that completed an opening-day treble for Willie Mullins and continued the trainer’s domination of this contest.

The Rich Ricci-owned mare stretched her unbeaten run to nine since joining Mullins from France as she came home well clear of outsiders Rock On The Moor (66-1) and Legacy Gold (40-1) to score by two and three-quarter lengths and half a length.

Having been held up in mid-division for the first half of the race, Vroum Vroum Mag took closer order at the top of the hill on the final circuit and was brought to challenge off the home turn.

Once Ruby Walsh pressed the button, she cruised into a clear lead between the last two flights and was never in danger as she outclassed her 18 rivals.

Another supermare

Just 40 minutes after his favourite mare Annie Power had landed the Stan James Champion Hurdle, Ricci was delighted to see Vroum Vroum Mag show her own quality with this authoritative win.

“This mare is very good and we don’t know how good she is really. I’m very lucky,” said Ricci.

Vroum Vroum Mag, who has been chasing for most of her time with Mullins and only recently switched to hurdles, could have run in the World Hurdle or even the Ryanair Chase.

Walsh said: “She settled nicely and jumped super. It was very good. Willie puts his horses in the right races.” He added that she could go back over fences.

Bookmakers in trouble

Vroum Vroum Mag had been 11-10 in the morning but went off 4-6 after earlier successes in the Ricci colours for the Mullins-trained Annie Power and Douvan.

Bookmakers were hoping for the same sort of reprieve as last year – when a Mullins four-timer was stopped by Annie Power’s fall at the last in this race – but their luck was out this time.

Vroum Vroum Mag was the eighth winner in a row in this race for Mullins following Quevega’s six-timer and the victory of second-string Glens Melody last year.

There was a sad postscript to the race with The Govaness suffering a fatal injury when falling at the last.
