Cam Newton on Super Bowl media walkout: I'm a sore loser

While plenty of people made excuses for Cam Newton’s postgame performance after losing the Super Bowl, he isn’t joining them.

“Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser,” Newton told reporters in Charlotte when asked about his conduct in the postgame press conference.

Newton gave a series of one-word answers — and blank stares — to questions from reporters following Carolina’s 24-10 loss to the Broncos before getting up mid-question and walking out on the media.

It was pointed out Monday that during the course of Newton’s interview, Broncos cornerback Chris Harris could be heard discussing the Denver gameplan in the background.

“Load the box, force ya’ll to throw the ball,” Harris could be heard saying. “Can you throw the football? That was the gameplan.”

While Harris’ interview boomed in the background, Newton could be seen shaking his head before getting up and leaving, but on Tuesday he wasn’t using the close quarters for interviews as an excuse.

“I’m on record as being a sore loser. I hate losing,” he said Tuesdday.

“I don’t have to conform to what anybody wants. I am my own person,” he added.

Even Harris said that he thought it was a bad setup after the game, and could understand Newton’s frustration, but added that the Panthers quarterback needed to deal with it.

“I don’t know why they had us in the same room or anywhere close to where they could hear us. I would have been mad if I was Cam too, to be able to hear your opponent right behind me talking, I mean no one wants to hear that so, I think that was a bad setup,” Harris told ESPN. “But I mean things happen, you’ve got to deal with it, you’ve got to approach things as a man. We’ve been in that situation where we’ve lost the Super Bowl and you’ve got to be able to take things as they come.”

While Newton wasn’t making excuses, he wasn’t exactly agreeing with the criticism of his conduct, either.

“Before you are quick to assume anything, what makes your way right?” he asked.
