Halling: enjoyed success as a racehorse and as a sire

 By Graham Dench 6:34PM 3 FEB 2016

TRAINER Saeed Bin Suroor has paid tribute to Halling, who died at Dalham Hall Stud on Tuesday at the age of 25 due to the infirmities of old age.

“It’s very sad news,” said the Godolphin trainer. “Halling did a great job both for Godolphin and Darley. He won five Group 1s for us, two of them in his first year with us and then three more in his second. He was a great stallion too.”

He added: “Everybody loved him at Godolphin and Darley, and so did Sheikh Mohammed. He was one of our best horses and it’s like losing a friend, but he lived a long and happy life and there are still some babies of his to look forward to.”

Top-class racehorse

Starting his career under the care of John Gosden, Halling was unraced as a juvenile but developed into a high-class handicapper at three, winning the Cambridgeshire before heading to Dubai where he notched three victories.

Halling returned to Newmarket at four, joining the yard of Saeed Bin Suroor, and swiftly established himself as a Group 1 regular.

He came out on top of a titanic battle with Singspiel in the Coral- Eclipse, becoming a tenth Group 1 winner for Godolphin, before cruising home in the Juddmonte International Stakes.

Halling enjoyed further success as a five-year-old, winning the Prix d’Ispahan before retaining his crown in both the Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International.

Legacy as a sire

Halling was retired in 1997 and sired leading performers such Jack Hobbs, Cavalryman, Cutlass Bay and Empoli.

He was also responsible for dual Group 3 winner and multiple Group 1-placed performer Norse Dancer, who is making his name as a leading jumps sire courtesy of high-class hurdler Yanworth.
