Richard Johnson: will be crowned champion jockey next month

RICHARD JOHNSON has bad news for his weighing room rivals after revealing on Wednesday he is already eyeing up the title again next season.

The 38-year-old will be crowned champion jockey for the first time at Sandown next month after becoming only the third jumps rider in Britain to post 200 wins or more in a campaign.

But after the best part of two decades playing runner-up to Sir Anthony McCoy, Johnson is hungry for more success and has already circled Thursday, April 28 in his diary for the start of the new jumps season at Towcester.

With a little more than four weeks to go until the season finale at Sandown, Johnson, with 215 winners this season, is just coming around to the idea of being champion jockey.

He said: “Hopefully we can say now that Aidan [Coleman] can’t really ride 90-odd winners between now and then. I’m looking forward to it. Obviously it’s something I’ve never done before and it’s the one thing I’ve always wanted to do.”

The ambition does not end there, though. He added: “I’m also looking forward to getting stuck in again the following Thursday. What I really want to do is maintain the winners and keep it all going.”

Maiden National win

As well as trying to secure his first Stobart-backed jump jockeys title, Johnson also has a duck to break in the Crabbie’s Grand National and his likely ride was one of his main comforts at a frustrating and blank Cheltenham.

“I thought Kruzhlinin ran really well on the first day, he just lacked a bit of speed on that better ground,” Johnson said. “I was pleased with him and the National is now the target. He’s run well around Aintree before, so hopefully he’d go there with a live chance.”
