BUFFERING’S victory in Saturday’s Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint was met with wild celebrations from connections and it also put an extra spring in Ascot’s head of international racing Nick Smith’s step as his global recruitment mission for Royal Ascot in June took him to Meydan.

Arguably the most popular sprinter in Australia, Buffering has now won seven times at the highest level and trainer Robert Heathcote is sweet on testing him against the best sprinters in Europe after he conquered in Dubai.

“It’s tremendous to have Buffering back in the picture,” said Smith yesterday. “They were keen on Ascot back in the winter and I’m in contact with his trainer Robert Heathcote.

“He could be one of several flying over from Hong Kong, where there is a Group 1 sprint on May 1, along with Chautauqua and Mongolian Saturday.”

Other sprinters on the radar

Despite finishing eighth to Buffering, Hong Kong sprinter Not Listenin’tome is another who remains in Smith’s focus as a strong international challenge for Ascot’s summer championships takes shape.

Smith added: “Not Listenin’tome looked in the wrong place on the track and is better than that and I’ll be following up on the Hong Kong horses.”

On some of the star names on track for Ascot, he said: “I met Enebish Ganbat, trainer of Mongolian Saturday, again in Dubai and he’s keen on running in both sprints.

“Tepin is on the track for the Queen Anne, where she could clash with ex-Aussie star Vancouver and Solow. A Shin Hikari is confirmed for the Prince of Wales’s stakes and there are lots of other Aussies in the mix, such as Japonisme, Press Statement, The Quarterback and Exosphere.”

Sir Maximilian ‘absolutely fine’

Cheltenham Festival-winning trainer Ian Williams is to map out a spring and summer campaign for Meydan regular Sir Maximilian, who failed to improve on last year’s sixth in the Al Quoz when finishing  eleventh on Saturday.

Williams said: “He’s come back absolutely fine. We’re just a bit disappointed how the race panned out for him. The speed that we expected to toe him into the race didn’t arrive until late and we ended up out on a limb a little bit. He’s capable of a little better but it wasn’t his day.”

Looking to the immediate future, Williams added: “He’s in rude health. He had a break last year after Dubai but he’ll continue to race in the spring and summer this year.

“He could go on his travels but it depends how he returns home.”

Dane O’Neill given all clear after fall

Dane O’Neill, who was taken to hospital after he was unshipped from Kifaah in the Golden Shaheen at Meydan, was discharged yesterday morning and was due to fly home last night.

His agent Nicky Adams said: “I think he’s okay and just a bit battered and bruised. He called this morning to say he will be getting a flight this evening and he’ll obviously have a few days off to recuperate when he gets home.

“There was a worry about a punctured lung but that’s all fine, he’s just very sore.”
