THE Cheltenham Festival may be looming large but the focus switches to the Crabbie’s Grand National on Saturday, with several contenders out to press their claims.

Leading the charge is last year’s winner and ante-post favourite Many Clouds, who heads to Kelso for the Listed totepoolliveinfo.com Premier Chase.

The 2m7f96y contest has been used as a stepping stone for Grand National winners before, with Ballabriggs taking in the race prior to his victory at Aintree in 2011.

Oliver Sherwood, trainer of Many Clouds, said: “He came out of Cheltenham well and we haven’t missed a beat with him since. This has always been the rough plan and he’s great in himself, very bullish.”

Pineau needs to show old sparkle

Pineau De Re is another National winner thrust into action on Saturday to prepare for a return trip to Aintree. His victory at Carlisle in December has been sandwiched between a fall at Aintree and disappointing run when pulled up at Chepstow last weekend and Richard Newland is looking for the 13-year-old to get back on track.

“He just didn’t seem to enjoy the hustle and bustle of a handicap like that,” the trainer said. “He came back fresh as paint so we thought we’d have a go with him here. It’s back over fences and he has cheekpieces on so hopefully we’ll see more from him. I’d like that to be the case as this is intended to be his last run before the National.”

The veterans’ chase Pineau De Re contests at Newbury also contains last year’s National fourth Alvarado, while The Last Samuri, an ante-post Pricewise selection for the National, is favourite for the BetBright Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster.

His trainer Kim Bailey said: “I’m very happy with him, he’s come out of his race at Kempton very well. He’s been trained for this race and the only downside I can think of is if the ground turns up very soft. But we’ve done all we can and he goes there in good form.”
