OFFICIALS at Fontwell have cancelled today’s scheduled meeting after 19mm of overnight rain left the course waterlogged in places.

Speaking before an 8am inspection, Clerk of the course Ed Arkell revealed: “We had 19mm of overnight rain and there is standing water on the course.

It was announced that the meeting had been cancelled shortly after 8am.

‘No improvement’

Following the inspection, Arkell commented: “There has been no improvement from first thing this morning and with further rain on the way – between 3mm and 8mm is forecast – there was no prospect of the course being fit to stage racing.”

There are no such concerns for the day’s only other jump meeting at Catterick, where the going is soft following 2.5mm of overnight rain, while Lingfield and Kempton both stage all-weather meetings.

Racing is due to take place at Wincanton tomorrow but the course will need to pass an inspection at 1.30pm this afternoon as 21mm of overnight rain has left the course waterlogged in places.
