AUSTRALIAN entrepreneur Paul Makin has been unveiled as the mystery purchaser of the Frankel-Finsceal Beo filly who smashed the Irish foal record when selling for €1.8 million in 2014.

The identity of the buyer had been the subject of much debate since the hammer went down to a final bid of agent Dermot Farringdon at Goffs.

The Racing Post can also reveal that the juvenile is now in training in Newmarket with Makin’s former neighbour William Haggas and is said to be “cantering away nicely”.

The filly, who is yet to be named, is one of five Haggas has from the first crop of Frankel, the 14-times unbeaten superstar who is due to have his first runners this season.

Looking precocious

Prior to her sale, the previous Irish record for a foal was €850,000 paid for a Sea The Stars colt in 2011.

Haggas said yesterday: “The Frankel-Finsceal Beo filly has joined us and looks a nice type as you would imagine. Paul Makin is her owner and no-one has known it was him who bought her all this time as he wanted to keep it low-key.”

Haggas added: “She’s cantering away nicely and you would hope she could run as a two-year-old as she looks precocious enough. It’ll be interesting to see how the Frankels go as he’s as yet an unproven stallion. But the quality of mares he’s been sent should serve him well.”

Last month Makin made another significant purchase when securing Peter Chapple-Hyam’s Group 1 Racing Post Trophy winner Marcel.

The Finsceal Beo filly is to date the most expensive Frankel offspring to be sold at auction. The second highest price is €1.7m paid for a filly out of Alexander Goldrun at the same sale. Since named Goldrush, that youngster is currently in training with Jim Bolger.
