David Ashforth: seeking the fascinating angles in day-to-day racing

Thursday’s racing: Chelmsford, Lingfield and Towcester

It’s a pity that Towcester’s gone to the dogs – it’s one of my favourite courses – but we must cherish the horse races that remain.

We could start by cherishing the humble opening handicap chase (1.05) which features the slightly remarkable Chankillo and the even more remarkable Andrew Thornton, although not in partnership.

Chankillo is evidence that good things come to those who wait (sometimes), in this case Andrew Gough. After losing his first 14 races, in 2013 Chankillo struck lucky in a selling race at Ripon, very lucky. David Nolan dropped his hands on Petrol and Chankillo sneaked into the lead. Two defeats later, Gough bought the four year-old for 800gns and sent him to Sarah-Jayne Davies.

Over the next two years Chankillo ran 24 times over hurdles and fences and lost every time. That’s an awful lot of post-race post-mortems but finally, last October, Chankillo won a small chase at Market Rasen off a rating of 84. On Boxing Day, he won at Market Rasen again, off 91. Can he win again, off 98? He has Sam Twiston-Davies to encourage him and the opposition’s weak but then so is he.

Thornton, on Bertenbar, is slowly clawing his way towards 1000 winners. Now 43, Thornton started his long career with the legendary Arthur Stephenson. There are far too many “legends” in racing but W.A.Stephenson was a real one.

Famously, when The Thinker won the 1987 Cheltenham Gold Cup for him, Stephenson was at Hexham, instead. The Durham trainer rarely gave interviews. I once tried to persuade him by enclosing a pencil, paper, stamped addressed envelope and the most persuasive argument I could muster. I got a nice reply but I didn’t get an interview.

Compare and contrast (do they still ask that in exams?) Thornton and Trevor Whelan, who rides Red Rosso. Thornton tall, upright, long stirrups and Whelan crouched notably low.

‘Lingfield perks up with the lady amateurs’ race’

Interesting isn’t it? Not a word that springs immediately to mind when contemplating the card at Lingfield although Seychelloise (2.50) (the Seychelles perhaps being where owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing goes swimming) catches the eye.

Things perk up with the closing lady amateurs’ race (3.50), featuring three riders yet to ride a winner. It’s fun watching inexperienced jockeys and trying to spot the capable ones before everyone does.

The splendidly named Maddi Bishop-Peck has only had a few rides under rules, Emily Bullock a few more and Ellie Mackenzie a few less; well, none actually. Good luck to them, although cautious investors may prefer the experience of Hayley Moore, of the Moore Clan, on Captain Felix.

‘It’s just a matter of finding a race bad enough’

If you’re still game for more after tea-time, at Chelmsford there’s the possibility of seeing trainer Andrew Balding presented with cream buns. He certainly ought to be if he can get Burmese Whisper (5.40) to win a race. He’s trying hard (Balding, not Burmese Whisper. I don’t suppose Burmese Whisper cares whether he wins or not).

So far, the three year-old’s score stands at 0 from nine. His recent form figures look promising – 4232. Less promisingly, that includes two sellers and a claiming race. It’s just a matter of finding a race bad enough. Is today’s maiden auction that race? Will it be cream buns all round?
