AIR FORCE BLUE will seek some sprinting salvation on Saturday after Aidan O’Brien gave last season’s leading juvenile the green light for the Group 1 Darley July Cup.

O’Brien’s wish for good ground or faster looked like being granted as the official going at Newmarket was changed to good to firm, good in places and, with a dry week forecast, Air Force Blue will get his shot at redemption on his favoured surface.

Last season’s champion two-year-old was a top-priced 16-1 with Paddy Power on Tuesday night but, with Ryan Moore likely to be claimed for the colt, a new partner would have to be found for Diamond Jubilee winner and race favourite Twilight Son.

“Air Force Blue will run on Saturday once the ground is good or better,” O’Brien revealed to the Racing Post on Tuesday.

“He’s had a little rest since the Irish Guineas and we’ve been happy with his work over the last few weeks. He’s a colt we always thought had lots of speed and you have to remember he won the Phoenix over six furlongs at the Curragh.”

Twilight Son, who won Haydock’s Sprint Cup under Fergus Sweeney last term, heads the betting for Saturday’s race at 4-1 in places, although a few firms offer 5-1, which is the general price of Magical Memory.
