Santa Anita: Santa Ysabel Stakes (Grade 3) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo fillies

KENTUCKY OAKS favourite Songbird (Jerry Hollendorfer/Mike Smith) extended her unbeaten record to six without any semblance of fuss with another imperious display.

Mike Smith kept it simple on last year’s US champion two-year-old filly, sending her to the front after she broke sweetly and then totally dominating her rivals as she was allowed to coast home well clear.

Old rival Land Over Sea rescued the winning margin to three-and-three-quarter lengths but frankly it could have been trebled as Smith did not move a muscle on the winner, who scored in the manner suggested by a dividend of just $2.10 – the equivalent of 1-20 and the lowest available return at Santa Anita.

After setting strong fractions (23.20s, 46.02s, 1m09.98s), Songbird stopped the clock at 1m43.02s.

“I could have let someone go to the lead today but I didn’t because it was there and it was that easy for her,” said Smith said.

Songbird has now won five stakes races, among them three Grade 1s including last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. She will run next in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks on April 9 before the Kentucky Oaks on May 6.

“We just keep doing our job and hope she keeps doing her job and we might end up in some good places with her,” said trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. “We’ve already been to good places with her but we could get to more.”

Gulfstream Park: Gulfstream Park Hcap (Grade 2) 1m, dirt, 4yo+

Blofeld (Todd Pletcher/John Velazquez), whose career has been seriously compromised by injury, got back on track as he edged up the rail to beat stablemate Stanford by a head to claim this $500,000 prize – the biggest on offer Stateside this weekend.

Aqueduct: Gotham Stakes (Grade 3) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo

Sheikh Hamdan already has the Kentucky Derby favourite with Mohaymen. Now his Shadwell Stable has another undefeated three-year-old colt on the Derby trail after Shagaf (Chad Brown/Irad Ortiz) completed a hat-trick in this $400,000 event, overcoming an Aqueduct speed bias to claw back front-running Laoban.

Next comes the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at the same venue next month.
