THE Paul Nicholls-trained Tommy Silver ran out a comfortable winner of the totetrifecta Scottish Triumph Hurdle Trial at Musselburgh, in the process enhancing his claims for the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

Tommy Silver’s price ranges from 14-1 to 20-1 for the Cheltenham Festival contest. His 11-length win also paid a handsome compliment to his Newbury conqueror Fixe Le Kap, who was trimmed into 8-1 by Sky Bet who had been offering a standout 9-1 about Nicky Henderson’s contender.

‘Have to be pleased with that’

Sam Twiston-Davies sent 4-6 favourite Tommy Silver straight into the lead and he always appeared to have matters under control as his mount travelled strongly and jumped proficiently. Ashoka emerged as the only danger as they entered the straight but his challenge was quickly repelled by Tommy Silver, who appeared to have plenty in hand as he drew clear late on.

Twiston-Davies said: “He’s an inexperienced horse – that was only his third race – and I have to be pleased with that especially as he made all the running.

“It is very windy out there and that didn’t help but he jumped well and should go on from this. He should make a chaser next season.”

Strong hand for Nicholls

Paul Nicholls, who has entered 12 horses in the Triumph Hurdle, has enjoyed a good weekend with his juveniles, this win following hot on the heels of Connetable’s success against older rivals in the Listed Contenders Hurdle at Sandown on Saturday.

Connetable, who represents the same connections as 2011 winner Zarkandar, is a best price of 12-1 in what appears to be a wide-open renewal of the Triumph after Ivanovich Gorbatov’s defeat at Leopardstown.

Nicholls and Twiston-Davies were denied a quick-fire double at Musselburgh when 1-2 favourite Sametegal was overhauled close home by Five In A Row, who was matched at 1,000 in running en route to his unlikely victory.

Five In A Row had cut out the early running but was passed by Sametegal as they made their way down the home straight for the first time.

Second-favourite Ittirad looked best placed to throw down the strongest challenge to Sametegal as the race began in earnest, but a blunder at the final fence seemed to hand the race on a plate to the favourite.

Sametegal tired close home, however, and Five In A Row, who was given a never-say-die ride by Danny Cook, came with a strong late thrust to surge ahead in the final strides, winning by half a length.

The dramatic nature of the race led commentator John Hunt to exclaim: “If I watched it a thousand times, I still wouldn’t believe it.”

Trainer Brian Ellison said: “I thought the ground had gone against him and three out I didn’t think he had any chance.

“But he is a real stayer and will do better when he goes up to three miles. He’ll probably stick to a novices’ race next and then we’ll look at handicaps.”
