Horsey McHorseface: named as tribute to Boaty McBoatface

 By Tony McFadden 1:42PM 16 APR 2016

Australia: If the people who vote in boat-naming polls also like a bet, then it is likely that Horsey McHorseface, named as a tribute to Boaty McBoatface, will be going off a very short price on his debut.

It is not yet known whether the UK’s National Environment Research Council will bow to the will of the people and name its polar research ship Boaty McBoatface, which topped a poll to choose the vessel’s name, but the Australian racing authorities have not stood in the way of trainer Bjorn Baker naming a two-year-old gelding Horsey McHorseface.

Horsey McHorseface is co-owned by Baker and Joe Rosetti, whose racing manager Joe Bruce told CNN: “We had a laugh about it in the office and thought, ‘hey, why not’. Any publicity is good publicity.

“He’s got as good a chance as any to make it and we’d absolutely love to win with him on a big day. It would be a. hilarious and b. great for the owners.”

The gelding was bought for the equivalent of £32,000 in November last year and was shipped from New Zealand to Australia, where he will be trained by Baker at his base at Warwick Farm racecourse in Sydney.

Horsey McHorseface is not the first homage paid to Boaty McBoatface: a train driver recently amused London commuters by renaming his train Trainy McTrainface.
