Yoenis Cespedes says staying with Mets was always 1st choice

The Mets introduced – or re-introduced, as it happens – Yoenis Cespedes in a Citi Field press conference Wednesday afternoon and the slugger offered a glimpse into the expectations the club will face this year:

“I know this team has everything it needs to continue on what we started last year,” he said through a translator. Later, he added, “We really wanted to start what we finished last year.”  

HOW METS GOT THE CESPEDES DEAL DONE

The presser, which was delayed a week or so because Cespedes had a prior commitment in Florida last week, started with a Cespedes highlight video, a montage of homers, big throws, bat flips and yellow armbands. It ended with the motto the Mets are trying to turn into a catchphrase: “Got Yo Back.”

When Sandy Alderson stepped to the podium to formally introduce Cespedes, he quipped: “Great video. I’m glad I didn’t see it before we got the deal done. It would have raised my anxiety level.”

Alderson also called Cespedes the “MVP of this entire transaction,” a reference to Cespedes’ desire to return to the Mets.

Alderson and Mets COO Jeff Wilpon helped Cespedes get into his No. 52 Mets jersey as cameras clicked away.

Cespedes and the Mets formalized a three-year, $75 million deal last week that contains an opt-out clause after the first year. Some might have figured Cespedes would get a bigger, longer deal, especially after Jason Heyward signed for eight years and $184 million, but Cespedes says he’s content. 

“Yes, I’m very happy with what we got,” Cespedes said. 

Cespedes talked about how much he liked the fan base in New York and his teammates. 

“The union between my teammates made me feel good here,” Cespedes said.
