Former West Indies cricket player Kieran Powell is aiming to play baseball.

The Mets and Yankees have both had looks at the famous cricket star who’s trying to become a baseball player. But it remains to be seen whether Kieran Powell can make the transition to the diamond in any meaningful way.

Powell, a former West Indies cricketer, had a workout in front of a dozen or so teams Wednesday at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The Yankees were one of the teams with a scout there, according to a baseball source.

Powell worked out at the Mets’ complex in Port St. Lucie last weekend, even posing for pictures with David Wright, who is already in Florida and stopped by the ballpark to see a workout with high school players.

The 25-year-old Powell, who might project as an outfielder, has lofty aspirations, though some in baseball are skeptical. At his age, prospects are usually already making their mark one way or another. Can he make any impact being so raw and so new to the game?

“My goal is to get signed,” Powell told USA TODAY Sports. “Any team that gives me an opportunity will be rewarded 100 times over. Once I get the opportunity, I’ll show that I can learn quickly and improve my game. I want to be in the majors in two or three years.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Powell has also had a workout in front of Brewers scouts. He has been training at the IMG Academy for the past five weeks, working on hitting with John-Ford Griffin, the Yankees’ first-round draft pick in 2001 who played 13 games in the majors with Toronto, and fielding with former Oriole Tim Raines Jr.

The Journal reported that Powell’s agent sent film of him to big-league teams following a contract dispute with his West Indies cricket team. The Dodgers liked what they saw enough to bring him to Southern California for eight weeks of training, giving him his diamond start.
