Hardly souls: very few braved the weather at Newcastle on Thursday

Newcastle: hit hard by wet weather, although the last few days were dry

NEWCASTLE has lost its third consecutive meeting to the weather after waterlogging forced the cancellation of Monday’s fixture.

The North East course has been hit hard by the recent wet weather and while the last few days have been relatively dry, the impact of consistent heavy rain earlier in the month is still being felt.

“It’s frustrating,” said clerk of the course James Armstrong.

“We had just under 3.5ml of rain on Saturday but when your ground has been so wet for so long, it just tops it up again and there are just a few areas I am not happy to run horses over.

“It has been nice and mild over the last few days and it gave us a glimour of hope but it just hasn’t improved enough.”

More meetings could be lost

Newcastle lost its meetings on both January 7 and 13 and Armstrong warned there is every chance the fixture scheduled for a week on Wednesday could also be jeopardised.

“We’ve lost three in a row now and we’ve got one next week on February 3,” said Armstrong.

“It will remain relatively dry between now and then hopefully. The forecast is not great but we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed.

“We’ve had over four inches of rain in January alone and for any time of the year, that’s bad but obviously in the winter it doesn’t dry up as quickly.”

No problems for Kempton

There will be some jumps action on Monday afternoon despite Newcastle’s cancellation, with no problems ahead of Kempton’s fixture.

The ground at the Sunbury venue is described as soft, while they will also race on the Tapeta at Wolverhampton, which is standard.
