VICTORIA PENDLETON marked her return to riding on the racecourse with a win on Royal Etiquette in the Countryside Alliance charity race at Newmarket on Thursday.

The pair proved far too good for their eight rivals in the one-mile contest, streaking clear to win by 12 lengths.

“It was really good fun,” Pendleton said. “Royal Etiquette won last year, so there was a bit of expectation on him but he’s just a lovely horse.

“He was one of the first horses I was allowed to ride when I first starting riding out because he was quite accepting of a novice, shall we say.”

Dual Olympic Gold medallist Pendleton famously finished fifth aboard Pacha Du Polder in the Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, having first sat on a racehorse just a year previously.

A significant chapter in Pendleton’s well-chronicled ‘switching saddles’ story came aboard the Lawney Hill-trained Royal Etiquette in an amateur riders’ handicap at Ripon last August, when the pair finished a close-up second on her first racecourse ride.
