RUNNERS in Saturday’s rescheduled Coral Welsh National will compete on ground labelled “very heavy” by clerk of the course Keith Ottesen.

Friday was a dry day at Chepstow and Ottesen is hoping that rain forecast for Saturday will not cause any problems for the race.

The Welsh National has already been rescheduled from its normal post-Christmas slot due to waterlogging and moved forward to 1.45pm from 3.25pm to ensure it is run on the best possible ground.

‘Heavy, very heavy’

Speaking on At The Races, Ottesen said on Friday: “We’ve had a dry day so far and I’m hoping for the best. We should have a mainly dry night and working on the best forecasts for tomorrow we should have the odd light shower.

“We would have been fine to race today and it’s heavy ground, very heavy I’d say.”

Ground an unknown

Upswing is favourite to land the Welsh National but his trainer Jonjo O’Neill admits the ground is an unknown for his runner.

He said: “He’s in great form and looks to have the right credentials for the race – if he handles the ground. He has twice won on heavy before, but the sort of ground he will face at Chepstow is a concern to everybody.

“It was a sensible decision to bring the race forward, and I couldn’t be happier with Upswing going into the race. Let’s hope for a bit of luck.”
