Usher fired, cop won't be used again after Carmelo-kid hug

A Smoothie King Center usher was shown the door after a young fan ran onto the court late in a game between the Pelicans and Knicks and hugged Carmelo Anthony.

In addition to the usher, a local cop who was hired to provide additional security will no longer be used by the arena’s management, NOLA.com reported.

Alan Freeman, the facility’s general manager, told the site that the crowd control barrier was not set up, allowing the kid to run onto the floor during a stoppage of play with less than a minute to go in the game. He also said that the police officer who was in that general area “was not doing his job.”

“So essentially what happened there is that you get two people who were not doing their responsibilities and that led to a black eye for us as the building operator,” Freeman said.

While Anthony was not upset over the interruption, he did say that arenas need to look at updating their security protocols.

“I think that’s something they need to take care of and look into as far as their security regardless if it was a kid or not,” he said late last month.

In a refresher course for the remaining ushers, arena management showed a video of Monica Seles being stabbed in the back during a break in a 1993 tennis match in Germany.

”Thankfully, it was just a young boy who wanted to get closer to maybe one of his idols,” Freeman told NOLA.com. “But it could have been something a lot more serious. They all understand that now.”

With Kobe Bryant due to visit New Orleans for the final time Friday, Freeman said that their security plans have been reviewed by NBA security.
