Tony Phillips, seen here in 1999 exchanging words with Jorge Posada, died Wednesday.

Tony Phillips, who won a World Series title with the Oakland A’s in 1989, died of an apparent heart attack on Wednesday. He was 56.

Phillips’ former A’s teammate Dave Stewart shared the news with Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

His former manager Tony La Russa told the Chronicle he was “in shock” over Phillips’ death.

“He was still in great shape,”La Russa said. “He was down here at our camp three or four days a week. I’m just in shock.”

La Russa, who managed the A’s to the World Series title, is now the chief baseball officer for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“Tony will forever be remembered by the fans because he made that last out (of the ‘89 World Series vs. the Giants), and it was a tough groundball he made a great play on.

“He had so much energy, he was so feisty, full of piss and vinegar – nothing fazed him. And you could play him anywhere.”

Phillips, who was a first-round draft pick of the Montreal Expos in the 1978 amateur draft, played with six different clubs during his 18 years in the major leagues.

He spent the bulk of his career with the A’s, but also played for the Tigers, Angels, White Sox, Mets and Blue Jays.

The A’s put put a press release on Friday stating that funeral services are pending.
