Tigers' Justin Verlander gives up home run to little brother

Justin Verlander is an American League Cy Young and MVP winner and was AL Rookie of the Year back in 2006. And he doesn’t even have baseball bragging rights in his own family.

The younger brother of the Tigers ace, Ben Verlander, took Justin deep in a minor league game on Thursday.

Ben was first-pitch swinging. He got a fastball over the plate. Boom, just like that he has the upper hand over his six-time All-Star brother, who also happens to date supermodel Kate Upton.

“I thought about throwing behind his back,” Justin Verlander told MLB.com. “but I decided to throw one down the middle instead. I’m sure he’ll enjoy that for a long time.”

And Ben Verlander wasn’t even supposed to be there. At the Tigers spring training complex, he was supposed to be playing on an adjacent field. But when he got word his brother was throwing, he jumped over and got in a quick at-bat. One he will never forget. And one he will never let his brother forget.

“This will be a family story forever and ever,” Ben Verlander told MLive.com. “I’ve said from the day I started playing baseball that if I ever face Justin that I’m going to take him deep. So for it to actually happen was amazing.”

Ben, either figuring it wouldn’t get better than that or realizing the team he was playing for might be looking for him, quickly left the field. Call it a walk-off home run.

“I did keep waiting for him to come back around,” Justin Verlander told MLB.com. “He wasn’t going to get another cookie down the middle. I guess he was supposed to be on one of the other fields.”
