THE GREY GATSBY was reported in top form ahead of his return to Ireland for a Group 1 showdown in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh.

The Grey Gatsby signed off on his superb three-year-old season with victory over Australia in the Irish Champion Stakes but failed to win at four, finishing second to Solow in the Dubai Turf, Free Eagle in the Prince Of Wales’s and Golden Horn in the Eclipse.

It has been confirmed that he will not race beyond five and connections are hoping for at least one more Group 1 win before his retirement.

Trainer Kevin Ryan’s son and assistant Adam said: “He is in great order, he is absolutely bouncing. He looks as well as ever and he hasn’t lost any of his speed. His work has been good so we are looking forward to running him.

“He was unlucky last year at Ascot, this was the run he had beforehand and it works nicely with a little break between now and then.”

Tremendous renewal in prospect

Sunday’s field looks set to include Qipco Champion Stakes winner Fascinating Rock and Found, who took the Breeders’ Cup Turf last year.

“If everyone turns up it looks a really hot Group 1,” Ryan said. “Found and Fascinating Rock are top-class performers but so is our fellow and we are excited about getting him back on the track.”

Ground conditions – which are currently on the fast side – should suit The Grey Gatsby, who is launching his season later than in 2015 when he started in Dubai.

“We felt that, if he is going to go to the Breeders’ Cup or the Arc, Dubai comes quite early in the year and would be a big ask to go from March to October,” Ryan said.

“We have heard they are due about 6mm of rain on Thursday or Friday but they said they needed it and by all accounts it is going to be nice, good to firm ground. We are always a bit panicky about the weather conditions but fortunately it sounds as though it is being kind to us.”

The Grey Gatsby is available at 5-1 with Coral and BoyleSports for the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Found is the general 4-5 favourite, with Fascinating Rock 7-2.
