Kenilworth: L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (Grade 1) 1m, turf, 3-y-o+

The Justin Snaith-trained pair Futura (Bernard Fayd’Herbe) and Legislate (Piere Strydom) dominate the race. Futura (2-1 favourite) won this 12 months ago when Legislate (11-5) started odds-on but finished last and was found to be suffering from a virus. This is his first race of the season but he runs well fresh.

Snaith said: “His best run last season was in the Green Point after four and a half months off when he broke the mile course record and we have done everything to replicate that. If he rocks up they had all better watch out while Futura has never been better for a race at a mile.”

Captain America (Brett Crawford/Corne Orffer) won this season’s Green Point, making all the running to beat Futura by half a length but Orffer stole a march on his rivals that day, kicking on as he turned into the straight.

Act Of War (Joey Ramsden/Andrew Fortune) was two lengths further back fourth in the Green Point when he came from a long way back and made up six lengths in the straight. However, Anton Marcus, declared to ride him, switched to the Sean Tarry-trained SA Derby winner Legal Eagle earlier in the week.

Racing manager Derek Brugman explained: “We feel that the pace could be strong and that would suit Legal Eagle but the main reason is that this is a prep for the J & B Met and Anton wants to take him round Kenilworth. It will be the horse’s first time round a left-handed turn.”

Noah From Goa (Mike de Kock/ Anthony Delpech) won the Cape Guineas and is the only three-year-old in the field.

Same Jurisdiction (Duncan Howells/Anton Marcus) is favourite but her trainer has reservations about her wide draw, saying: “It’s not in my favour and this is going to be a real test of her stamina. That said, she is a classy filly and I couldn’t have asked for a better preparation.”

Smart Call (Alec Laird/Weichong Marwing) has only a length to make up on their running in the Garden Province at Greyville while last year’s winner Inara (Mike Bass/Grant van Niekerk) is a big price at 8-1.
