WHETHER you’re a teacher, doctor, student, stockbroker, chef, recruitment consultant or labourer, this might have affected you at some stage during your professional life. And I’m not talking about taxes. Work prevents a load of us from watching Cheltenham live, but fear not – here’s how to enjoy the festival at the coalface.

Text commentaries
Not a shameless plug, I promise. The Racing Post app, a right little beauty available via the App Store, on Apple and Android, is an incredibly useful resource, not least for its live text commentaries. The sight of the phrase ‘making headway’ next to your great white festival hope, even if only briefly, really can stir the senses. So if you’re stupid enough to have booked back-to-back meetings on day one, or simply unlucky enough to have to sit through a two-hour lecture while everyone else enjoys the racing, fear not. Fire up this bad boy, place your bets, keep your device in sight and you won’t miss a thing.

Bet and view
Also available via the Racing Post app, this allows you to stream each race live via your preferred bookie – and for as little as a quid each time. So if you want to be the hero who helps all the lads on site to see if that Mullins four-timer actually comes good, stream the race live on your device and huddle round like scouts over a fire. It’s the perfect partner in crime if, unlike via the text commentaries, you’d rather actually watch your money go up in smoke.

A guilty pleasure and not for the faint-hearted, but an effective way of keeping tabs on the action while pretending to fill in a spreadsheet. Watching a race on Betfair can be exhausting. If you block out the dross and simply appreciate the speed with which the information is delivered, you are on to a winner. In the instance of all breaking news, the world now rushes to Twitter, so why should this week be any different? Make sure you open a new tab or check your phone every few minutes – or you’ll come back to 800 new tweets and miss everything. In the immediate aftermath of Annie Power’s dramatic 2015 festival exit, the Twittersphere was on the verge of combusting, but for fast results and sheer lunacy, come here.

Rely on your mates
Yep. You can. Or you can at least try. Friends are here for us in times of need, apparently, and via messaging apps such as Whatsapp they can be there at all hours of the day. Create a group with your racing-mad pals and let the banter flow until race time, when the good among them will keep you abreast of the goings-on. Expect ‘OMG! Did you see that?!’ if something Vautour-esque happens. On the flip side, if you’re more inclined to keep in touch via SMS it’s best not to say you don’t need, or indeed want, to know the Grand Annual result as you’ll be back home from the office in time, because you’ll know what’ll happen.
