Report: South Africa, Saturday

Kenilworth: J & B Met (Grade 1) 1m2f, turf, 3yo+

Smart Call (Alec Laird/JP van der Merwe) smashed her male opponents when winning Cape Town’s biggest race and could be seen in Britain later in the year.

Laird, who also ran his 1997 Met winner London News in Britain, said: “We are going to stick to our plan to go for the Breeders’ Cup with Smart Call and after today we’ve got the best horse in South Africa to send there.

“She will go into quarantine next month and arrive in England in June where she will be stabled at Abington Place in Newmarket. She could have prep runs there. France would also be a possibility although America might provide softer options.”

JP van der Merwe only knew he had got the ride – regular partner Weichong Marwing has a bad back – when he arrived at Cape Town airport on the morning of the race.

The 25-year-old said: “I sat behind Anton Marcus on the favourite Legal Eagle and pulled her out a furlong and a half from home. This is the biggest thrill of my career.”

The 8-1 chance beat Legal Eagle by three-and-a-half lengths with Captain America running on into third.

Justin Snaith was out of luck with Legislate and Futura but he won seven of the first nine races on the card to equal his own South African record.

Gulf Storm (Brett Crawford/Corne Orffer) got the best of a blanket finish to spring a 12-1 surprise and give his rider his first success at the top level.

Crawford, who also won this with the famous Laisserfaire in 2002, said: “We had this race planned for a long time and putting blinkers on made all the difference. I didn’t use them before because he used to overrace but, coming back to five furlongs, I felt I had to put them on. He will go to Durban and run in the Golden Horse Sprint at Scottsville in May. He was second in it last year.”

The five-year-old beat Brutal Force a head with long-time leader and 7-2 favourite Carry On Alice a neck away in third.
