TWO of the leading contenders for the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase clash in Ascot’s Sodexo Clarence House Chase on Saturday and while Gary Moore reckons he has Sire De Grugy in super order, the trainer is wary of the threat posed by Un De Sceaux.

Sire De Grugy, who can be backed at 5-2 for Saturday’s Grade 1, won the race two years ago when he also captured the Champion Chase.

He was below that form last term, but has returned to somewhere near his best this season, winning a second Tingle Creek at Sandown in December before finishing second in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton 27 days ago.

His main rival at Ascot is the Willie Mullins-trained front-runner Un De Sceaux, last year’s Racing Post Arkle winner who is 4-6 with William Hill.

Moore, who also runs Traffic Fluide, said: “I’m really frightened of Un De Sceaux.

“Sire De Grugy won’t be hassling him up front, and I shouldn’t think Traffic Fluide will, either, so we’ll play it by ear.

“Sire is definitely going to get his ground, as long as it doesn’t ride tacky, and I think he has a better chance of beating Un De Sceaux at Ascot than he would at Cheltenham. We got beat in the Champion Chase last season on ground that was too quick for him. The sort of conditions we’ll get at Ascot are more in his favour.

“Whatever happens, I think you’re going to see the best of him at Ascot. He is as good as we’ve had him since his big season and he is better than he was at Kempton.”

‘A thrilling ride’

Un De Sceaux, a winner every time he has completed, fell at Leopardstown last month when attempting to win a fourth consecutive Grade 1.

“He’s schooled really well since, his work is good, we’re happy with him and Sire De Grugy is a new challenge for us. He sets a standard and we have to get up there,” his jockey Ruby Walsh told Racing UK.

“We’re happy and we’re looking forward to it. Un De Sceaux likes what he does, he’s brave, he likes to get on with it and attack fences. I enjoy riding him but the margin for error is quite small. I think he’s a thrilling horse to ride.”
