Christophe Soumillon and Pierre-Charles Boudot: share title spoils

CHRISTOPHE Soumillon was, as expected, handed his 179th win of the 2015 Flat season on Thursday, when Walzertakt was awarded the Prix Gladiateur by stewards.

The amended result means Soumillon has belatedly joined Pierre-Charles Boudot in a tie for the championship and will be awarded an eighth career cravache d’or.

Though France Galop did not immediately publish the findings of the stewards enquiry, it has been widely reported that first past the post in the Gladiateur, the Eric Libaud-trained Fly With Me, tested positive for a banned substance.

Fly With Me’s disqualification also means that the Mark Johnston-trained Oriental Fox has been promoted to second in the Longchamp Group 3.

Boudot ensured he could not be passed by Soumillon – whatever the outcome of the enquiry – when winning the final race of the Flat season at Pau on New Year’s Eve.

For his part Soumillon must wait for one further piece of business at France Galop headquarters before celebrating his latest title success, as connections of the Boudot-ridden Oratory Davis have lodged an appeal against his disqualification at Deauville on December 28.
