ONLY four days after the weights were published for the Crabbie’s Grand National, Saturday heralded the first assaults made on the ante-post favouritism of Many Clouds, who has topped the market ever since winning last year’s renewal.

There were no fewer than half a dozen National entries cut across the boards on Saturday, most notably impressive Ascot Chase winner Silviniaco Conti.

A dual Betfair Chase and King George VI Chase winner, Silviniaco Conti would nonetheless receive weight from Many Clouds at Aintree, as would top-class Irish chasers Boston Bob and On His Own, first and second respectively in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, one of Ireland’s major Grand National trials.

Paul Nicholls, trainer of Silviniaco Conti, said: “The Grand National is a definite possibility for Silviniaco Conti. It is highly likely he could run. He is going to be arguably well in now and Noel [Fehily, jockey] is keen on the idea.”

On the back of those comments, Silviniaco Conti, rated 177 at his best, moved into second-favouritism for the National and is now a general 20-1 chance for Aintree glory.

Mullins’ team takes shape

Willie Mullins has shadowed Paul Nicholls at every turn this season and he too now has legitimate National contenders, with Boston Bob (assigned 10st 10lb for the National) and On His Own (11st 1lb) being considered for the jumps season’s most lucrative prize. Bobbyjo Chase third Turban (10st 10lb), another Mullins runner, was also cut for Aintree.

Referring specifically to Boston Bob, who is 50-1 with Ladbrokes but generally a 33-1 shot and shortest of the trio on most lists, Mullins said: “He’s back to form on ground he wouldn’t be bred for. I think the owner [Graham Wylie] is keen to run him at Aintree and we’ll see how he comes out of this race.

“We’re aiming all three for the Grand National at this minute,” he added.

More options for Lee

Rookie trainer Kerry Lee also added to her Aintree options on Saturday, as Bishops Road took the Betfred Grand National Trial at Haydock on just his second start for the yard.

Though he had never run much beyond three miles before, few would doubt Bishops Road’s stamina after his determined win in gruelling conditions at Haydock and he is now a 33-1 shot for Aintree. Runner-up Broadway Buffalo also shortened, to as low as 25-1 though he can still be backed at 66s with Ladbrokes.

Lee said of Bishops Road: “He is by Heron Island, the sire of Black Hercules who is favourite for the four-miler at Cheltenham, so we were hopeful he would get the trip today.

“Alan Halsall [owner] and I bought him with the National in mind and on we go. We saw him run in Ireland a lot and when he won at Leopardstown I was really impressed.”

There was another, unexpected mover at Haydock. Mr Moonshine, a former Becher Chase third, pulled off a 33-1 shock in the Pertemps Qualifier on the card and was cut to 40-1 with bet365. Others were less taken and left him at 100-1, possibly reflecting his position in the Aintree weights, out of the handicap and currently in 94th place.
