BRISTOL DE MAI stated a strong case for Cheltenham Festival glory with a flawless performance in this Grade 1 event, in which the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained five-year-old jumped superbly throughout.

Kempton hero Tea For Two, who was bidding to create more history under jockey Lizzie Kelly, the first female rider to enjoy a British Grade 1 winner over jumps, could manage only third.

As De Mee claimed second for Paul Nicholls, but they were ultimately outclassed by the impressive all-the-way winner.

Willie Mullins’ Killultagh Vic dominates the JLT betting at around 9-4, but Bristol De Mai is now 6-1 (from 8) with Paddy Power, who also make him 12-1 (from 16-1) for the RSA Chase.

Smart performer

Owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, whose colours were carried to success by Gitane Du Berlais in this race 12 months ago, look to have another high-class youngster on their hands judging by the way Bristol De Mai, himself a Grade 1-winning juvenile, negotiated the notoriously tricky Sandown fences.

Beaten by Racing Post Arkle-bound Ar Mad in the Grade 1 Henry VII Novices’ Chase before Christmas, Bristol De Mai followed up with a pair of wide-margins wins at Leicester and Haydock before arriving here with obvious claims.

And, despite being as big as 9-1 earlier in the week when RSA fancy More Of That and Willie Mullins’ contenders were still among the field, Bristol De Mai was sent off 10-11 favourite and never gave his backers a moment’s doubt under Daryl Jacob.

Although Tea For Two, successful in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase on Boxing Day, and As De Mee stalked the leader entering the home straight, neither could cope with his potent finishing kick and expert jumping.

‘More to come’

Jacob said: “He’s a very young horse and there’s more to come from him. We went a good even gallop. I rode the race to suit my lad and he quickened well passing two out down to the last. He pinged the last and went away.

“He’s been very good on heavy. The heavy it is the better, but he’s very versatile ground-wise.”

Munir, Bristol De Mai’s part-owner, added: “That was his seventh run, so he seems to be getting better and better with every run. The JLT will now be his target.

“The whole thing is a great team effort and Daryl is very much a part of it.”
