Gulfstream Park: Fountain of Youth Stakes (Grade 2) 1m½f, dirt, 3yo

KENTUCKY DERBY favourite Mohaymen (Kiaran McLaughlin/Junior Alvarado) faces the biggest test of his career to date as he seeks his fourth Grade 2 success in the Fountain of Youth, on paper the hottest three-yearold contest so far this year in the States.

Only a 6-1 chance with Ladbrokes for the Run for the Roses, the son of Tapit is bidding to extend his unbeaten sequence to five overall in this $400,000 contest, the principal trial for the Florida Derby.

“It’s a tough race but I wouldn’t trade places with anybody,” said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. “It’s going to be his toughest race to date. Zulu is undefeated. Awesome Banner is undefeated. Awesome Speed is a nice horse. It’s going to be tough and we just hope we keep going and stay the same. We don’t have to improve but it’s more experience and hopefully we get lucky to win.”

Something must give in the Fountain of Youth, where – as McLaughlin noted – Mohaymen’s most serious rivals are also unbeaten.Awesome Banner (Stanley Gold/Jose Caraballo) is stretching out for his first try around two turns after winning a pair of Graded stakes already at this meeting with the Hutcheson and the Swale.

Coolmore-owned Zulu (Todd Pletcher/John Velazquez) is rated his connections’ foremost hope of US Classic glory after a pair of eyecatching victories. “We could have opted for an easier spot but we felt like it was in his best interests to stay on a track that he’s two-for-two on and find out where he fits with the big boys,” Pletcher said.

“We think he’s a very talented colt. We anticipate he’s going to improve stretching out. He’ll need to against this group but we’ve been pleased with what he’s done so far and pleased with how he’s trained since the allowance win.”

Ladbrokes: 2-5 Mohaymen, 5 Zulu, 7 Awesome Banner, 12 Awesome Speed, 33 Fellowship, 100 Golden Ray

Gulfstream Park: Davona Dale Stakes (Grade 2) 1m, dirt, 3yo fillies (6.56pm GMT)

Unbeaten in three by a cumulative 34 and a half lengths, Cathryn Sophia (John Servis/Javier Castellano) comes in with quite a reputation to uphold. She scored by more than five last time in the Grade 2 Forward Gal, where she showed a new dimension to her running style by settling off the pace. Castellano deputises for the injured Joel Rosario in a race also featuring Demoiselle one-two Lewis Bay (Chad Brown/Irad Ortiz) and Thrilled (Todd Pletcher/John Velazquez).

Gulfstream Park: Herecomesthebride Stakes (Grade 3) 1m½f, turf, 3yo fillies (7.25pm GMT)

Breeders’ Cup winner Catch A Glimpse (Mark Casse/Florent Geroux), who completed a hat-trick on grass in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
