CC Sabathia will be the fifth starter, while Ivan Nova will begin in the bullpen.

MIAMI — CC Sabathia beat out Ivan Nova for the fifth spot in the Yankees’ starting rotation, manager Joe Girardi said Friday before the Yanks were slated to play the Marlins in an exhibition game.

“There was a lot of discussion,” Girardi said. “Lot of it came down to CC’s September last year. He’s been there so many times.”

Nova had a 4.13 ERA in six spring starts, including six scoreless against the Braves in his last outing. Sabathia’s spring ERA was 5.51.

Sabathia was a different pitcher toward the end of last year when he started wearing a knee brace, notching a 2.22 ERA and going 2-1 in his final four starts.

Girardi would not say that Sabathia is on a short leash. “We’re going to watch.”

“Obviously, you gotta perform,” Girardi added. “I mean, let’s not forget what he did last September. So we’re hoping he continues off that. We talked a lot about how it’s hard to judge older players in spring training. It is. I believe it takes them a long time and when you’re established they haven’t had that mindset of: ‘I gotta compete for a spot.’”

Nova will pitch out of the bullpen when the Yankees’ season starts Monday against the Astros at the Stadium. He said he is ready for the challenge of being used as a reliever, though he was disappointed not to get the job.

“My mind is good,” Nova said.
