The Rangers signed left wing Daniel Paille to add depth up front on Thursday morning, bringing in a former Boston Bruin who helped ruin Alain Vigneault’s quest for the Stanley Cup by dropping his Vancouver Canucks in seven games in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.

Paille, 31, will join the Rangers immediately for their two-game road trip through Carolina on Friday and Ottawa on Sunday, before the team plays its final pre-All-Star break match on Monday night at the Garden against Paille’s other former team, the Buffalo Sabres.

Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News first reported the deal, a two-way contract at a minimal $575,000 cap hit.

There is no way of knowing what other action GM Jeff Gorton will take prior to the Feb. 29 trade deadline, but Paille’s acquisition certainly has the look of showing faith in the current group and bolstering them by adding a former Cup winner.

Paille’s acquisition presumably will allow Vigneault to rest some starters up front during what promises to be a grueling second half schedule. It also adds a player to the lineup who will give Vigneault what he expects every night, compared to some current players on the roster who are unpredictable — particularly young players, which is understandable.

Forward Jayson Megna’s time with the NHL club could be up, but there was no indication of that yet as of Thursday. Paille has been out of the NHL thus far this season, skating in 31 games with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL.
