Jesper Fast gets hit in the left cheek with a puck in Friday’s practice before Saturday’s game against the Stars.

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas — Rangers forward Jesper Fast was hit in the left cheek with a puck at practice Friday afternoon outside Dallas, and he was down on ice for a couple minutes before being helped off with a gash under his left eye, disoriented, with his face bloodied.

The Rangers stopped their special teams drill immediately. The rink went silent, and his teammates helped Fast off ice with the help of trainers, but the incident casts doubt for Fast’s availability for Saturday afternoon’s game against the Stars. The Rangers only have 12 forwards on this trip, so they may have to play with only 11 forwards and seven defensemen.

Rookie defenseman Dylan McIlrath may play as the team’s 12 forward, as coach Alain Vigneault was prepared to do if rookie Marek Hrivik had been forced to miss Thursday’s 2-1 win in St. Louis with flu-like symptoms (Hrivik ended up playing).

RANGERS MAILBAG: KREIDER’S FUTURE AND CUP CHANCES

Backup goaltender Antti Raanta appears to be the starter for Saturday’s game, the Rangers’ final match prior to Monday’s 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline. That’s despite Henrik Lundqvist being on fire lately, the only reason the Blueshirts beat the Blues.
