Rangers deal winger Emerson Etem to the Canucks

The Rangers already have traded the only NHL-ready piece they acquired in last summer’s Carl Hagelin deal.

GM Jeff Gorton sent right wing Emerson Etem to the Vancouver Canucks early Friday evening in exchange for right wing Nicklas Jensen and a 2017 sixth-round pick. In the trade, the Rangers and Canucks swapped two former first-round picks that both were selected 29th overall in their consecutive draft years.

Etem, 23, an Anaheim Ducks 2010 first-round selection, played in just 19 of the Rangers’ 40 games this season with no goals and three assists. Jensen, a Canucks 2011 first-round pick, has not played in the NHL this season and has four goals and 12 points in 27 games for the AHL’s Utica Comets.

Jensen, a product of Herning, Denmark, will be 23 on March 6. He has played in 24 career NHL games with three goals and three assists, scoring all of his points during a career-high 17 games for Vancouver during the 2013-14 season.

Gorton and Rangers coach Alain Vigneault had spent Friday afternoon’s practice in Greenburgh hemming and hawing when asked about Etem, who was not present. Gorton would not comment. Vigneault claimed Etem was to be sent to the AHL for a conditioning assignment later in the day.

“We’re trying to sort that out,” Vigneault said when asked if Etem’s time in New York had run out.

There were certainly nights this season when Etem played a lot harder and smarter than some bigger name Rangers players. However, he’s supposed to score. He consistently wasn’t a threat, and he didn’t always show the fire that he demonstrated best in his season-high seven straight appearances from Dec. 11-Dec. 22 before Vigneault inexplicably scratched him on Dec. 28 in Nashville.

Whatever Kevin Hayes did to finally set Vigneault off brought Etem back into the lineup for the next two games, but Etem’s horrendous outing in Florida on Jan. 2 sealed his fate, including a turnover and penalty that both led to Panthers goals.

Etem did not have a strong preseason, but the Rangers kept him around because they didn’t want to waive him and lose him for nothing. He was the only NHL-ready player they’d received in their June 27 trade of Hagelin, their 59th overall second-round pick and their 179th overall seventh-round selection to Anaheim for Etem and the Ducks’ 41st overall second-rounder.

Any hesitance to get rid of Etem, though, seemingly was alleviated by Jayson Megna’s Rangers debut Tuesday night with a goal and an assist in Tuesday night’s 6-2 win over Dallas. The Rangers also do not view their return from the Hagelin trade as a wash, since they had their eyes trained primarily on Anaheim’s 41st overall pick, which they used to select the player they coveted, forward Ryan Gropp, 19.

Gropp, who is playing for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League, signed an entry-level contract with the Blueshirts on Dec. 31.

The Rangers (22-14-4, 48 points) host the NHL-leading Washington Capitals (30-7-3, 63 points) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Garden.
