Greiss makes 28 saves as Islanders top Red Wings 4-1

The Islanders finally cracked the code against the Red Wings Monday afternoon. In their third matchup in 22 days, the Isles defeated Detroit 4-1 at Barclays Center.

Thomas Greiss made 28 saves to earn his 16th win of the season and has won his last five starts. Jaroslav Halak took the loss in the first two games against the Wings and sputtered against Carolina on Saturday, allowing six goals in two periods.

The two goalies have mostly split time this year, with Halak playing 30 games to Greiss’ 25. Greiss could wrestle more playing time away from Halak if he maintains his current form, though.

“We had this kind of laid out with this stretch,” Jack Capuano said before the game of Greiss starting Monday. “I haven’t even looked — I know we’ve got Washington on Thursday, but I haven’t really looked or thought about it right now to be honest with you. But goaltending, as you guys know, it’s crucial going down the stretch if you want to have the chance to make the playoffs here and make a push.”

Brock Nelson scored his 21st goal of the season — tying John Tavares for the team lead — at 8:24 of the second period. Nelson deflected Ryan Strome’s pass and followed the puck into the end zone, where he banked a shot off of Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard and in.

Josh Bailey scored a power-play goal at 14:57 of the second, pouncing on a rebound off a Johnny Boychuck blast from the point. One minute and six seconds later, Marek Zidlicky, who returned to the lineup in place of Brian Strait picked up a Cal Clutterbuck shot off the end boards, rounded Howard and scored his fourth goal of the season, his first since Dec. 13.

Pavel Datsyuk pulled one back for the Wings at 9:31 of the third, finishing off a rebound to get them within two. Ryan Strome answered with his seventh goal of the year at 12:14, finishing off a nifty backhanded pass by Tavares from the left circle into the slot.
