THE last two winners of the Crabbie’s Grand National, Many Clouds and Pineau De Re, have the opportunity to triumph again at Aintree as they featured among a bumper 126 entries for the race on Wednesday.

Many Clouds would be the first back-to-back winner of the Grand National since the legendary Red Rum [1973-74], and preparations for the Oliver Sherwood-trained nine-year-old are going well following his second to Smad Place at Cheltenham last weekend in the Grade 2 BetBright Trial Chase.

The 126 entries is the highest total received since 2008, when there were 150, and with the exception of the injured Monbeg Dude, the first six from last year’s race could all reappear.

Other notable entrants include The Druids Nephew, who was in contention last year before falling, Don Poli, fourth favourite for the Gold Cup and one of seven possibles for Willie Mullins, and Silviniaco Conti for Paul Nicholls.

Comeback trail

Double Seven, third in 2014 before missing last season through injury, could run for Martin Brassil, who won the race in 2006 with Numbersixvalverde.

The ten-year-old has had two runs over hurdles this season at Punchestown, finishing fifth and ninth, and Brassil may give Double Seven a spin over fences before tackling Aintree again.

“We are taking it one step at a time at the moment and we won’t really know where we are until he runs in a race when the conditions are right for him. He wants nice ground,” Brassil said.

“I’m not sure what we are going to do between now and Aintree. He could have a run over fences but we will see how he is.”
