The Knicks hang in there on the road against a playoff team, but just aren’t good enough to get a win.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Pacers were wearing their maroon Hickory High uniforms but the Knicks were the overmatched underdogs Wednesday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The visitors also couldn’t pull off the upset because of a long miss from Kristaps Porzingis and an overall dud from Carmelo Anthony.

Porzingis’ potential game-winner clanged off the rim with about eight seconds remaining, a 3-pointer from well beyond the line that transitioned to Indiana’s 108-105 victory on Wednesday. The Knicks still had a chance to tie on their final possession, but Anthony airballed his 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Kristaps Porzingis (l.) and Carmelo Anthony both miss 3-pointers in the final seconds to seal the Knicks fate in a loss to the Pacers Wednesday.

The forward missed 15 of his 20 shot attempts and was overmatched by Indiana’s Paul George, who scored 25 of his 27 points in the second half. Porzingis led the Knicks with 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Jose Calderon added 20 points, including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

In addition to his dreadful shooting, Anthony picked up a costly flagrant foul when he elbowed Myles Turner down the stretch. The Knicks (24-35) have lost 13 of their last 15 games.

Kurt Rambis left D-League call-up Jimmer Fredette on the bench for the entire game after hinting the guard was outmatched in practice.

“We had a rough, aggressive defensive practice yesterday, looking at different guys and what they were doing defensively, so in some parts he got pushed around a little bit,” Rambis said. “And guys were active offensively as a result of the defense. right now, it’s probably still going to stay with the same rotations that we’ve used before.

“It’s just being young or skinny or small, when you have a physical game or a physical practice, that’s something that happens. it’s not like it was so obvious or something, like he was just falling down all over the place. it was nothing like that. but you can just see when guys get more physical, then there’s going to be more issues with things.”
