OFFICIALS at Plumpton have called for an inspection at 10am after the track was hit by 12mm of rain overnight, which has left surface water in places.

The course is due to stage its richest ever raceday, headlined by the At The Races Sussex National. The Sussex National had been due to take place in January but the meeting was abandoned after three races.

‘Very hopeful’

Speaking shortly after 7am, clerk of the course Mark Cornford said: “I measured a total of 12mm of overnight rain. The ground is not bottomless but there is some surface water.

“The rain has just passed through but the forecasts vary and I’ve seen some which suggest showers throughout the day. It would be a concern were we to receive much more rain but most of the surface water is on the old lines, not the ones we will be racing on today, and I think it looks worse than it is.”

“I’m very hopeful racing will take place,” he added.

‘Fair and honest’

“Isn’t it ironic to be the Sussex National again?” Cornford said when asked whether the abandonment of January’s fixture mid-way through the card had played a part in his decision to call an early inspection this time.

“It is a very big day for the racecourse and we are expecting a lot of customers. I want to be fair, honest and upfront with racegoers,” he added.
