Peyton Manning to announce retirement Monday

Despite his postseason struggles, Peyton Manning retires as a two-time Super Bowl champion and is the only man to quarterback two franchises to a Super Bowl.

Peyton Manning held up the Vince Lombardi Trophy high above his head moments after the Broncos defeated the Panthers in Super Bowl 50 last month, and as it turns out, he was saying goodbye. It was the last rodeo, as he called it, for The Sheriff.

In a decision that was highly anticipated, Manning, the NFL’s only five-time MVP, will announce his retirement Monday, according to an ESPN report, ending one the greatest careers in league history after 18 seasons that included two Super Bowl titles and every important passing record. He is the only quarterback to win the Super Bowl for two different teams and all four of his Super Bowls came with a different head coach. He will celebrate his 40th birthday on March 24.

Manning does leave with a couple of asterisks attached to his name: He was cited in a television documentary in December connecting him to using HGH that he had delivered in his wife’s name in 2011 as he was recovering from his fourth neck surgery, years before the NFL started testing for HGH. He vehemently denied the report.

Following the Super Bowl, details of a 20-year old sexual abuse allegation that stemmed from an incident that occurred in 1996 with a female trainer in the training room when Manning was at Tennessee received a lot of attention after the Daily News published details of a second lawsuit she filed against him after he had begun his NFL career. Manning has not addressed that incident since the most recent report.

On the field, Manning didn’t have many asterisks other than he just didn’t win enough Super Bowls for a player considered the greatest regular season quarterback in NFL history. His Super Bowl record was 2-2 and his overall playoff record was just 14-13. But the last three playoff victories, including Super Bowl 50, came with him in a diminished role when he returned in the final game of the regular season after missing nearly two months with a partially torn plantar fascia in his left foot.

He was beaten down physically the last two seasons and throwing the ball became a struggle. He never had a fastball like John Elway, who now runs the football operations in Denver and signed Manning in 2011, but the ball was taking much too long to reach its target.

“I’ve never really given a status of an arm. It’s not like it’s giving a status of a player, kind of a whole human body. “My arm has not been the same since I got injured four years ago. It just simply hasn’t been. I had a strange injury. I had a neck injury that caused some nerve problems in my right arm. My high school coach used to always tell me when you’re sprinting left it’d be a lot easier if you could throw it left handed if you were amphibious and I think he meant ambidextrous. I hurt my arm and I had that nerve damage and I said, ‘if only I could throw left-handed now it would be a lot easier.’ I’ve worked hard to sort of manage with the physical limitations and have gotten to a place where I think I could be effective and that’s where it is.”

Many of the records Manning set in his 14 years with the Colts (he actually played 13 years because he missed the entire 2011 season) and four years with the Broncos may never be touched: Most touchdowns in a career (539), season (55) and game (7, tie). Most passing yards in career (71,490) and season (5,477). Most game with a perfect 158.3 passer rating (5), and most victories including the playoffs (200). He is tied with Brett Favre for most regular season victories with 186.

With the Colts, Peyton Manning struggled to match his regular season success in the playoffs, which became an underlying theme during his career.

Manning, who was the overall No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft, was due to make $19 million in 2016 and that would have become guaranteed if he was still on the roster at the beginning of the league year on March 9. If Manning had not retired, then Elway was expected to cut him. Last year, Elway asked Manning to take a $10 million cut from his $19 million salary, but Manning refused. They settled on a cut of $4 million, which Manning earned back in the playoffs: $2 million for getting to the Super Bowl and another $2 million for winning it.

Elway won the recruiting battle to bring Manning to Denver when he was a free agent five years ago after the Colts released him. Elway’s goal was to do everything he could to help Manning end his career the same way he did by winning the Super Bowl. In fact, Elway won the Super Bowl his last two seasons.

Elway delivered on his promise to build a Super Bowl team around Manning. The Broncos made it to Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium two years ago, but lost to the Seahawks 43-8. They lost in the divisional round to the Colts following the 2014 season.

When Manning was benched in the third quarter on Nov. 15 against the Chiefs last season after throwing four interceptions, it looked like his career could be over when he was subsequently diagnosed with the foot injury. Brock Osweiler played well, beating the Bears on the road and then bringing the Broncos back from a 14-point deficit to beat the Patriots in overtime.

But when Osweiler’s play slipped and Manning got himself healthy, coach Gary Kubiak put him back on the field against San Diego and he helped the Broncos clinch the No. 1 seed. Manning transitioned into a new role as a game manager and was along for the ride as the Broncos defense dominated in the postseason, battering Tom Brady in the AFC Championship and league MVP Cam Newton in the Super Bowl.

His rivalry with Brady may be something the NFL never sees again. Brady led the series 11-6, but half of Manning’s victories came in the five playoff games they faced each other. Manning won the last three matchups, all the AFC Championship Game.

After beating the Patriots in the AFC title game this past season, Manning told Belichick and Brady separately on the field that it might be his last rodeo and he has appreciated the competition with them. Now it’s up to Peyton’s little brother Eli, who has beaten Brady twice in the Super Bowl, to carry the Manning name going forward.
