Panthers bring back rats, get delay of game penalty

The rats are back!

Fans in Florida at the Panthers – New Jersey Devils game Thursday night were given rubber rats to commemorate the team’s run to the Stanley Cup Finals (more on that in a minute) pelted the ice with the fake rodents so frequently, the home team was given a delay of game penalty.

Video of the rat-ization of the Panthers ice definitely showed coac Gerard Gallant mouthing some choice words, directed at either the referees for calling the penalty or perhaps the fans for chicking the rats.

But why rats, you ask?

Twenty years the Florida Panthers stunned the NHL by making a run to the Stanley Cup Finals in just their third year in existence. Legend has it, that on opening night of the 1995-96 season, a rat ran across the locker room and Scott Mellanby slapped it with his stick, killing it. He then used that stick to go out and score twice in the game. It was goalie (and former Ranger) John Vanbiesbrouck who called it a “rat trick.”

When fans got wind of it, they ran with it and the rat throwing became the young expansion franchise’s first tradition – a tradition that continued on Thursday night.

This time it was Jonathan Huberdeau that scored twice in a 3-2 win over the Devils.
