CALIFORNIA CHROME has been dealt another poor hand in the draw for Saturday’s Dubai World Cup, but connections hope that he has the class to overcome it.

In a ceremony on Wednesday in which runners’ names were drawn randomly before connections had the option to choose, the World Cup favourite was eleventh of 12 names to emerge and trainer Art Sherman, left with the choice only of the two widest stalls, opted for 11.

The five-year-old, who was drawn nine of nine when second to Prince Bishop 12 months ago, remains 6-4 favourite with Coral, who tightened main rival Frosted to 2-1 from 9-4 after Godolphin representative Jimmy Bell chose stall nine.

Sherman was philosophical and said: “Listen, the outside is good if you’ve got the horse, and I hope we have.

“I’ve already said he’s five lengths better than last year but we may have to use that up to get around there. He won’t be far back, as he’s a lot of speed, and hopefully he’ll get a smoother ride than last year when they were five horses wide. We’re going for the full enchilada.”

Jockey Victor Espinoza, who landed the Triple Crown on American Pharoah in 2015,  admitted 11 was by no means the draw he hoped for, but pointed out it could have been worse.

Espinoza view

He said: “I didn’t want to be too far out but we just have to go with the flow, there’s no choice. It’s an improvement on last year, and I think for me 11 is better than the one hole. There’s nothing wrong with the one hole, but there are a lot of horses and I wouldn’t want to be crowded.”

Both trainer and jockey insist California Chrome is a better horse this year and Espinoza said: “Last year I don’t think he was 100 per cent. This year he’s come back more fresh and has two races under his belt, including a prep race here. He ran really well last year in second and I was proud of him, but hopefully he can improve on that.

“This will be my third World Cup. I’ve finished third and second and hopefully I can keep upo the sequence.”

Frosted’s trainer Kieran McLaughlin fears California Chrome and would prefer him not to be on his outside but said: “We wanted to be out in the clear. We didn’t want to be down on the inside. We are happy with where we are and William [Buick] can work out a trip. It’s a long run from the start to the turn.”
