PAUL NICHOLLS is able to call on one of last season’s heroes for the first time this weekend, as defending champion chaser Dodging Bullets returns to competitive action at Newbury.

The eight-year-old helped Nicholls secure another trainers’ title with three consecutive Grade 1 victories last term, the highlight of which was a length and a quarter defeat of Somersby at Cheltenham.

However, a troublesome splint injury has kept Dodging Bullets sidelined. But he is now ready for action, and Nicholls is delighted with his condition.

Speaking at a media morning on Tuesday, Nicholls said: “We’re thrilled with him at the moment. He looks in great shape and is great in his skin. He’s done loads of work and is fit enough to run really well on Saturday, but whatever he does a race is going to make a difference for Cheltenham.”

Newbury’s re-opened Grade 2 Betfair Exchange Chase – registered as the Game Spirit – will be the starting point for Dodging Bullets, and he is one of eight entries, along L’Ami Serge and Captain Conan.

While expecting the outing to shake off any rustiness Dodging Bullets may have from nearly a year off, Nicholls is confident he will be competitive.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had him as fit and well going into his first run of the season,” the trainer added. “I’m happy he’s in good enough shape to run very tidily on Saturday. He’s eight now and should be at the peak of his powers.”
