Yoenis Cespedes thinks MLB’s foray into Cuba is ‘very important’ for his home country.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Yoenis Cespedes will not watch much of MLB’s historic trip to Cuba, President Obama’s visit or even when the Rays play the Cuban national team at Estadio Latinoamericano.

But the Mets slugger understands what it means to the players that are back in his native Cuba.

“I think it is a very important step for Cuban baseball,” Cespedes told the Daily News through an interpreter.

And he hopes the Rays will take advantage of the trip.

YOENIS CESPEDES’ CUBA: NEWS VISITS METS STAR’S HOMETOWN

“Cuba is obviously a country that is not as developed as here,” Cespedes explained, “but I really think the Tampa Bay Ray are going to enjoy it and playing in Cuba.

“And they will enjoy the Cuban fans,” he added.

A prominent member of that Cuban national team, Cespedes defected with family in 2011, taking a harrowing 23-hour boat ride to the Dominican Republic before finding wealth and fame in the United States.

He still misses the island and the fans in Cuba.

“Cuban fans are joyous,” Cespedes said. “They have makeshift instruments in the stands that they make and they play them. The fans dance and play music and they have a lot of fun at the games.”

When asked if he’d like to see the Mets fans adopt this in Citi Field, Cespedes sighed and nodded.

MLB VISITING CUBA FOR FIRST TIME IN 16 YEARS

“That would be nice,” Cespedes said.

While he won’t be watching the Rays play his countrymen Tuesday, Cespedes said it will be a big deal in Cuba.

“It’s going to mean a lot over there, just because we really don’t have access to major league baseball, not because the people don’t want to see it, but because it is limited,” Cespedes said. “It’s going to be great for the people to see major league baseball players.

“It means a lot that they are playing there, a very big step.”
