MIRACLE man Brian Toomey is excited about the next chapter of his already remarkable life story as he revealed on Monday that he is set to join Grand National-winning trainer Richard Newland as an assistant next month.

Toomey, who has struggled for rides since returning to the saddle after a fall that left him clinically dead for six seconds, will continue to race-ride and is hopeful of picking up the odd mount from his new boss.

“I’m not stopping riding at all, I will continue race-riding, but from next month I will be assistant,” said Toomey. “I’m starting the next chapter of my career and I hope to learn a lot from Dr Newland.

“He doesn’t have a big yard, but he gets the best out of all his horses and hopefully that is something I can learn. I would love to train in time, but I’m still riding, my aim’s still to ride, but hopefully I can learn at the same time.”

Winners hard to find

Toomey returned to action last July, almost exactly two years after suffering severe head injuries in a near-fatal fall at Perth.

He rode initially for Phil Kirby, before moving to David Pipe’s in the hope of more opportunities. However, he has found rides hard to come by and is yet to partner a winner in 21 rides since his remarkable comeback.
