Mets GM says no 'great urgency' in getting long-term deals

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The Mets have not had any discussions about long-term deals with their young aces this spring, Sandy Alderson said Friday. And, the GM added, there’s plenty of time for such talks to occur.

“I think that’s something that everyone needs to keep in mind,” Alderson said, referring to the amount of team control the Mets still have on starters such as Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.

“There seems to be a fixation on some of our players and the brevity or length of their time with the Mets. In all these cases, it’s going to be a while. From that standpoint, is there urgency? From our standpoint, I don’t see any great urgency.

“From their standpoint, is there urgency? Probably not, in most cases.”

The Mets have a few years of club control on their young starters – Matt Harvey is eligible for free agency after the 2018 season followed by Zack Wheeler (eligible after the 2019 season), deGrom (after 2020) and Syndergaard and Steven Matz (both after 2021).

Alderson said the fact there’s been no talks this spring is more a function of camp timing than any deep meaning. He said it’s “not because we’re unwilling or because there isn’t any interest on the part of the players.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson doesn’t think there is urgency on either side.

“It’s just we are where we are on the spring training schedule. It’s a little early. Agents don’t typically come in until later.

“I don’t think you can draw anything from it.”

Alderson isn’t dwelling on potential extensions, either.

“Right now, I’m focused on the present,” he said. “I’m going to enjoy these guys. I’m not going to get too uptight about what might happen in 2020 with respect to these players at this point, because there’s plenty of time for us to resolve all of that.

“In the meantime, the most important thing is for those players to perform and for the team to win.”
