Yankees Insider: Refsnyder not so hot at third base

[ad_1]

SARASOTA, Fla. — Rob Refsnyder has done enough to warrant serious consideration for the final utility infield spot on the Yankees’ roster, but the rookie reminded everybody on Friday that he is still inexperienced at third base.

With the Yankees leading the Orioles by two runs in the bottom of the 10th, Refsnyder committed a throwing error to start the inning. Orioles right fielder Dariel Alvarez followed with a grounder to third, a ball that took a strange hop and glanced off Refsnyder’s face, cutting the infielder near his mouth.

“You can get that hop at second, too,” Joe Girardi said. “It does happen quicker (at third), but we’re trying to do it to give him an opportunity here and we’ll continue to try.”

Refsnyder was lifted from the game, replaced by Dan Fiorito as the Yankees went on to lose, 11-10. Refsnyder said he was “all good” after the game. He is slated to make the trip to Dunedin Saturday to play the Blue Jays.

“I don’t anticipate it being a problem,” Girardi said. “I figured instead of trying to get it to stop bleeding, we’d make a switch and keep things moving.”

The Yankees are considering Refsnyder, Ronald Torreyes and Pete Kozma for the final bench spot, needing an infielder to back up Chase Headley at third. Refsnyder has displayed the ability to make the plays at third, though Friday showed he still has a lot to learn.

“He’s done OK. He has not had easy plays, that’s for sure,” Girardi said. “We’re asking him to do a lot in a short period of time, but he’s done OK. I think it’s too early to evaluate. We have another week to go and we’ll continue to work at it.”

BRETT SET
Brett Gardner said his timing at the plate “felt a little off” during his first week of games, but two hits against Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals on Wednesday helped Gardner get his groove back. He went 2-for-4 with a triple, a bunt single, a run and an RBI on Friday.

“The other day against Strasburg I felt really good,” Gardner said. “I felt like I was on time for the most part, took some good swings and felt pretty good today. Took a couple of good swings and I feel good. Body feels good, legs feel good, wrist feels good, everything.”
