SIR Tony McCoy believes Ivanovic Gorbatov should not be overlooked for the JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival after his defeat last weekend with the prospect of better ground in the spring likely to help the four-year-old.

McCoy, assistant racing manager for leading owner JP McManus, was on hand to watch Ivanovich Gorbatov finish fourth in the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown having been sent off the 8-13 favourite.

The defeat resulted in Ivanovich Gorbatov’s price for the Triumph Hurdle being shunted out to 6-1 (from 3-1) although his price has since contracted again to around 9-2 favourite.

However, that defeat came on heavy ground and, speaking on Channel 4 Racing, McCoy said: “He was a little disappointing but I wouldn’t write Ivanovich Gorbatov off. The Triumph looks a very open race at the moment.

“He’ll be better on better ground. He’s run twice in really heavy ground and Aidan [O’Brien, trainer] says as he’s out of a Gulch mare so he’ll be a lot better when he gets better ground.”

Tent can make presence felt

McCoy also feels My Tent Or Yours can make an impact in the Stan James Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, but admits Faugheen will be extremely tough to beat.

McCoy rode My Tent Or Yours, who has not raced since April 2014, in a gallop at Kempton with Hargam on Friday and said: “Faugheen is obviously the one to beat but I think if My Tent Or Yours gets back to where he was when he was second in the 2014 Champion Hurdle he’ll run a big race.”
