MONDAY is the first day of the summer break in the National Hunt season, with no jumps scheduled until Newton Abbot next Wednesday. Leading trainers and jockeys give us their thoughts and plans for the break.

Donald McCain, trainer

I don’t think an end-to-end season is healthy for anyone and a proper break is badly missed. While it’s great for jockeys you’ve got to think about the horses and the staff and I’d be keen for two weeks – maybe even three – some time at the end of June or early July perhaps.

Robert Stephens, trainer

I’ll be at home as I’ve got a couple of runners on the Flat and my winter horses are in now so it will nice to be able to focus on them. But would it not be better to have a big break at the end of the season?

Tom O’Brien, jockey

I’m going back home to spend some time with the family. The summer has been busy for me and I’m looking forward to recharging the batteries.

Wayne Hutchinson, jockey

We’re taking the kids away for a week. The timing suits me as it’s school holidays and I’m looking forward to it as I’ve not been away this year.

Peter Bowen, trainer

We’re going to Majorca for five days but I’d rather be staying at home.

Christian Leech, husband of trainer Sophie Leech

We rather stupidly have just come back from holiday so it will be business as usual at home during the break. I expect we will go away again next half term.
