Calvin Johnson is coming off another monster year for the Lions, with 1,214 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is thinking about pulling a Barry Sanders.

The 30-year-old receiver released a statement through the team saying that he is “currently evaluating options for my future” and expects to have a decision soon.

Johnson has played nine years in the NFL and just wrapped up another productive season — his sixth-straight with more than 1,000 yards receiving — for the 7-9 Lions.

“Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future,” Johnson said in the statement. I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future.”

The Lions said that they “have profound respect for Calvin and certainly understand and appreciate his decision to give proper thought and consideration to his football future.”

If Johnson — who sustained a concussion in 2011 and played through an ankle injury this season — does retire, it will draw inevitable comparisons to Sanders’ decision to call it a career after the 1998 season at age 30. In Sanders’ 10th and final year in the NFL he rushed for 1,491 yards, fourth best in the league, and four touchdowns.
